Comment:
While I was only able to attend Campion for two years, 61-63, I truly benefitted from the teachers and the Jesuit philosophy. Since graduating from Loras College in Dubuque in 1969, I have worked for non-profit organizations my entire adult life. I started out as a special education teacher, then went into advocay work for people with disabilities, opened some group homes for disabled adults, started a transitional housing program for homeless adults through our inner city Catholic parish, and in 1990 founded the first Father's Resource Center in Minneapolis. I have been working with low-income fathers for the past 25 years. My work brought me to Washington DC, where I developed curricula to train staff of community agencies on how to create more father-friendly environments. I moved to Arizona in 2007 to work for the Native American Fatherhood and Families Association, working with low-income native fathers on reservations across the US. I now work for a Child Crisis Center in Mesa Arizona, working with single, divorced, transitioning and teen fathers to help them enhance their parenting skills and gain access to their children. My grown son Zachary works in the same field, running a program for teen fathers at Catholic Charities in St. Paul Minnesota. My wife Denise and I have adopted two special needs daughters and we have been foster parents for over 20 years. Denise is a marriage and family therapist in private practice. I teach ethics and psychology at two local universities as adjunct faculty. I was ordained as a deacon is the Catholic Church in 1996 and my ministry is working with incarcerated fathers and in a food pantry, as well as volunteering in a local inner city parish. I plan to work with fathers full time into my 80's, then may slow down a bit. In 1985 I created a game called Catholic Trivia (Pre-Vatican II version). It was republished by Angelus Press last fall. My adult life has been focused on social justice and I have been very lucky to be married to a wonderful woman who believes in the same approach to the world. I continue to live a full and satisfying life, partially due to the influence of the teachers at Campion. |

Comment:
I left Campion after Sophomore year and completed High School at St. Ignatius in Chicago. Went on to Loras College in Dubuque and graduated in 1969 along with a few Campion alums: Tom McWilliams, John Tift, Jim Piurick (sp?), and probably a few more. I ended up in the insurance business and in 1981 started my own brokerage firm in Chicago. In 2002, with my son running the business, I went back to school at the University of Chicago to earn a Masters in Religious Ethics; we then sold the company to Arthur J Gallagher & Co. and I now fill the roll of Chief Ethics Officer, reporting to the Chairman of the Board. Maripat and I have six kids and twelve grandchildren and have been married for 45 years this summer. It's been a great run. One of my regrets in life was that I left Campion rather than finishing with you guys. Thanks for including me in this event. |
